Overview

Loretto is Scotland's oldest private boarding school. Set within 85 acres of of beautiful grounds, Loretto is located in the small coastal town of Musselburgh, six miles from the bustling cultural centre of Edinburgh. There is a strong personal tutor system an much emphasis is placed on the highly regarded Sixth Form programme and competitive university entrance seminars. The School is deliberately small, made up of two parts, the Junior School (3-12) and the Senior School (12-18), allowing a purposeful and caring family atmosphere.

Unique Points

Acknowledged as a centre of excellence for its music, drama and art, Loretto is an all-Steinway piano schoo, has its own theatre, Chapel, recording studio and radio station, and many pupils now pursue successful careers in this field. Using the local Championship links golf courses and on-site facilities, the Loretto Golf Academy is the leading golf school in the UK.

Entry Requirements

Admission at 13+ is normally via the Loretto Assessment Test and/or the Common Entrance examinations (60% is the minimum requirement across all subjects). Pupils whose schools cannot prepare them for Common Entrance will sit Loretto’s own examinations in English, Mathematics and verbal reasoning. The Assessment Test is held at Loretto throughout the year and on an individual basis, although assessment papers can be sent to schools overseas. Places become available every year for admission into the Lower Sixth (Year 12). Admission at 16+ is conditional upon the pupil achieving at least six passes at Grade ‘C’ at GCSE, IGCSE or six grades at ‘2’ at Standard Grade or equivalent. ‘A’/’B’ Grades is normally the minimum requirement to continue the subject at A Level. Pupils whose first language is not English are also required to sit the Loretto Sixth Form Assessment Test.
